Opportunity
Full-time position. Reports to the Engineering Director, directly interfaces with the Chief Operating Officer.
Overview
Metrom Rail employs exceptional engineering professionals of varied disciplines, including electronic engineering, firmware development, mechanical engineering and RF engineering. A new project opportunity has created a need for a properly qualified project management professional. This individual will be responsible for coordinating and facilitating a major safety-critical major product development program.
The primary work location for this position will be at our corporate office in Crystal Lake, Illinois. Project responsibilities will require periodic travel to customer locations (office and field sites), and may include occasional international travel. Railroad safety training is required and will be provided by Metrom-Rail. The candidate must consent to a background check to satisfy federally-mandated safety training requirements.
Responsibilities
Achieve technical requirements and schedule commitments for a rail-safety development project
Detail and document product requirements and corresponding verification test plans
Define project staffing level, required disciplines and expertise necessary for project
Manage a team of electrical, firmware, mechanical, software, testing and verification engineers
Manage internal and external personnel for product documentation
Provide technical contributions to project where appropriate
Coordinate internal performance and environmental testing
Coordinate external laboratory FCC, EMC, shock and vibration testing
Create and maintain budget for project expenditures
Schedule, execute, and follow-up on design reviews at appropriate milestones during the development process
Ensure that the project team complies with the applicable development process and standards
Guide development activity through safety compliance audits
Collaborate with quality engineering staff during the course of the project
Oversee the design and fabrication of development and production test fixtures
Coordinate the creation of written engineering and production test procedures
Work with sales and marketing to support customer interface and product milestone demonstrations
Plan and manage beta site testing at customer locations
Knowledge / Experience
7-10 years of experience of managing > $1M technically complex projects
Proven product development skills and experience. (10 years minimum)
Demonstrable success launching several products
Educational Requirements
At least a Bachelors degree in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Electronics Engineering or equivalent engineering related education
Project management seminars / training

Capable of handling big picture visualization as well as precise development details
Logical, rational, thorough, precise thought process
Effective interpersonal skills for presentations to development team and customer
Proficient with written technical English
Competency in Microsoft Office tools
Background
The candidate must exhibit a history of bringing products from concept to production quickly and must be able to maintain a positive attitude under pressure. A diverse work history that demonstrates a wide range of knowledge and success at deriving creative solutions to complex design / engineering issues is essential.
Essential Background - A qualified candidate will have experience and expertise in the following areas:
Embedded programming or embedded hardware development
System architecture design
Software development project management
Fail-safe design or project management
Design FMECA, Fault Tree Analysis
Application of safety and ISO 9000 quality standards
Writing requirements documents and quality system compliance documents
A qualified candidate will also have familiarity with a number of the following areas:
Design and testing for EMC & FCC certification
Electronic packaging for rugged environments (high vibration and shock, outdoor exposure)
RF communications
Vehicular-mounted system development
Writing and execution of verification test plans
Customer interfacing
Production test procedures and test fixtures
Wiring and cable design
Thermal management
PCB design
