Senior Engineer - Electrical

SUMMARY

Independently evaluates, selects and applies standard engineering techniques, procedures and criteria using judgment in the solution of assigned engineering tasks. Must be able to solve complex problems by applying a broad knowledge of engineering or scientific principles to accomplish technical assignments within the discipline (e.g., Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical or Computer Engineering). Plans and prepares schedules for tasks and implements new/modified designs to achieve technological improvements. Determines feasibility of various product ideas from a technical and implementation standpoint. Makes recommendations for future product development.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

1. Conserves and effectively uses the company resources by incorporating new technological advances in the state-of-the-art and by employing improved design technology in executing engineering assignments.

2. Defines and leads the design, development, and implements activities required to support both new products, and/or solve problems on current products, by applying broad based technical skills and acquired knowledge of several branches of science and engineering.

3. Directs technicians in the preparation of development and qualification tests, analyze results, draws conclusions, and presents summary and recommendations in a test report. Prepares Qualification Test Specifications and Qualification/Test Reports.

4. Prepares engineering input for product documentation and manuals.

5. Applies code/standards guidelines and requirements to product design.

6. Performs and/or assigns engineering investigations involving calculations and/or tests in support of new product designs, methods, or process studies.

7. Responsible for the actual designs, and for leading the individuals developing the designs, and the drawings for a variety of components, sub-assemblies, processes or equipment in support of control projects.

8. Supervises interactions with vendors, suppliers and consultants to assure engineering models and prototype parts comply with designs and specifications.

9. Provides technical support to other company and corporate groups as required in assigned areas of responsibility.

10. Maintain product/project detail records and provide engineering activity reports as required and/or agreed upon with engineering management.


WORKING CONDITIONS

General office environment. Sedentary work - light lifting and carrying, occasional bending, stooping, twisting, walking, standing, reaching, handling, fingering, feeling, kneeling, crouching, pushing and pulling. Requires seeing and the ability to distinguish shape, size, distance, motion and depth. Requires hearing and the ability to speak and communicate effectively with others. Employees occasionally work near moving mechanical or electrical components. Possible exposure to periodic pungent odors, fumes, airborne particles, and biological agents. Exposure to intermittent high noise levels is possible. Position requires travel to Customer(s), vendor(s), or other work related locations.


Job Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS

Education and/or Experience:

1. Bachelor’s Degree in the appropriate discipline from a four- year college or university.
2. Advanced degree in specific engineering field or Professional Engineering license is a plus.
3. Eight plus years of directly related experience.
4. PC literacy desirable.

Language Skills:

1. Ability to read, analyze, interpret, and summarize information and written materials.
2. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedures/manuals.
3. Ability to effectively format and formally present information.
4. Ability to effectively communicate with STERIS associates, supervisors, managers, and senior level executives.

Reasoning Skills:

1. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
2. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical information in various forms, and deal with several abstract and/or concrete variables simultaneously.
3. Ability to access situations based on facts and quickly react to provide direction to Associates involved.


NATURE OF PROBLEM SOLVING

1. Good written and verbal communication skills.

2. Capable of solving complex engineering problems through accurate interpretation of requirements and test results.

3. Motivation of design related personnel is important.

1. Approves component selection to meet design approach.

2. Fundamental approach and design concept are reviewed with the Engineering Supervisor(s), Engineering Manager(s) or Director.
