Northern Powers Systems Integration Engineering group is currently seeking a Mechanical Engineer to participate in the design and development of our advanced technology wind turbine products. This position requires a well-rounded and creative mechanical engineer that has experience in developing and analyzing large machines and/or structural systems, control systems, power conversion systems, and rotating machines. The ideal candidate has experience in the control of pitch controlled wind turbines.
The primary function of this position is to support the development of the turbine system by making strong contributions in the areas of structural analysis, controls development, and system testing. This requires a broad understanding of structural dynamics, rotating power conversion systems, control theory, and data analysis as well as a creative approach to find the best solutions. Clear communication and a team oriented approach will be required. Additionally, we are looking for proficiency with system modeling tools such as Bladed, Flex5, FAST, Matlab and Simulink for design development, testing and validation.
Responsibilities
Work with engineering team to develop and analyze the impact of the control system on wind turbine dynamics and loads
Develop and maintain Matlab/Simulink models of wind turbines
Participate in regular design reviews on control system status and issues
Help maintain control system design documentation
Evaluate feedback from field and improve control system design
Required Qualifications
Bachelors degree in engineering or mathematics, or equivalent experience
Minimum of three years experience designing, modeling and analyzing dynamic systems
Proficiency in using Matlab and Simulink for modeling of dynamic systems
Theoretical and practical knowledge of system-level dynamic modeling of dynamic rotating machines and power systems
Ability to manage time and priorities in fast-changing development environment
Ability to evaluate design risk in complex systems
Ability to work in a team environment on multiple tasks
Ability to learn new concepts quickly
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
Masters degree in mechanical engineering
Experience with wind turbines 100kW and larger
Experience with generators and power converters 100kW and larger
Experience with vibration & dynamic structural analysis
