Purpose and Key Results of the Position
The Engineering and Continuous Improvement Manager is responsible for leading the engineering and continuous improvement team, providing the technical direction necessary for defining, maintaining, and improving site and facility manufacturing processes and utilities. Also responsible for planning, directing, and coordinating capital and non-capital projects that support business and manufacturing quality, service, cost, safety, and quality objectives. This includes involvement in design, construction, installation, testing, modification, and maintenance of facility, grounds, equipment, and machinery. This position report to the Vice President of Manufacturing and includes direct supervision of engineering and staff.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities
Capital Planning & Execution
•Develops short term and long term capital plans. Successfully prioritizes, plans, and presents data/supporting justification of capital expenditures to senior management.
•Provides technical leadership for the design, planning, and implementation of all capital projects (site, facility, process, and utility). Provides advice and aide to all managers in the development of projects.
•Directs and coordinates resources for capital programs/projects, ensuring effective scoping, planning, budgeting, communication, and results.
•Responsible for capital request/approval process (i.e., standards, forms, presentations, project management, etc.).
•Coordinate internal and external engineering and construction resources required for the successful design, installation, and startup of capital projects.
•Implementation of plant standards and best practice programs applicable to the design, operations, and maintenance of the facility and utilities.
•Ensure technical specifications are developed and testing procedures are in place before equipment purchase and installation/start-up.
Continuous Improvement
•Provide leadership for the application of continuous improvement tools and training's to meet business objectives.
•In collaboration with the manufacturing team, coordinate engineering and maintenance resources to support achievement of manufacturing initiatives relating to system utilization/efficiency, yield, quality, throughput, safety, and food safety.
•Provide site leadership for technical solutions to operational problems, including system optimization, process/flow improvements, and troubleshooting.
•Accountable for strategy, design, and implementation of technical improvement plans for manufacturing systems, including controls and manufacturing information systems.
•Research and identify new manufacturing methods and technology to be used to improve overall cost, quality, safety, and support innovation and new products.
•Ensure efficient management and continuous improvement of utilities and energy performance for site.
Technical Leadership
•Assist with development, planning, and execution of company-wide manufacturing strategy.
•Develop and maintain an effective engineering team by providing proactive leadership, direction, coaching, and development.
•Facilitates and fosters a team-oriented, continuous improvement philosophy.
•Ensures the engineering team works in collaboration with cross-functional departments and project teams to deliver business and team objectives.
•Accountability for management of external technical relationship with A/E firms, contractors, and equipment vendors.
•Act as liaison to public utility, environmental, municipal, state, and federal agencies as needed.
•Serve as technical liaison for all levels of company, including production/maintenance employees, plant management, and Research & Development. Develop/deliver technical training's for all levels of the organization.
•Lead a safe work environment by facilitating safety awareness within the manufacturing, facilities, and engineering teams and with outside contractors, and by complying with all relevant health and safety regulations.
•Ensure human and food safety are top priorities in design and execution of all projects.
•Manage food safety activities related to maintenance and engineering.
•Ensure that facility construction and equipment design is fit for food and manufacturing and conforms to sanitary design standards.
Safety
•Adheres to safety programs in order to provide a safe and clean workplace for fellow employees within all OSHA local, state and federal regulations.
Other
•Performs other assignments from time to time as requested by the Vice President of Manufacturing to achieve department and company business goals.
•Participate as a member of the HACCP and FSMT Teams.
Knowledge, Skills and Ability
•Leads with a Safety First attitude, which is practiced with integrity and a high degree of accountability of end results.
•Recognized technical abilities and practical experience with strong capabilities in the following areas: Theory/functionality of manufacturing systems and unit operations, continuous improvement techniques (lean, TPM), food science/chemistry, process engineering, process measurement, and control.
•Strong leadership skills which include change management and relationship building.
•Interacts effectively with people in all areas of company. Builds and maintains cross functional work teams.
•Ability to identify potential business solutions involving a broad scope of thinking across business and functions to develop new innovation.
•Excellent group facilitation, written, and oral communication skills
•Knowledge of regulatory agency codes, requirements, standards, etc.
•Understands engineering specifications, industrial ordering procedures, and inspection procedures on equipment.
•Strong root cause, problem-solving execution, and countermeasure implementation.
•Strong proactive outlook, anticipates potential roadblocks and opportunities, and plans accordingly.
•Strong project management skills including leadership, organization, scheduling, budgeting, negotiations, and contractor selection.
•Software proficiency in MS Office, MS Project, and AutoCad.

Qualifications

•Bachelor Degree in an Engineering Discipline (i.e. civil, mechanical, chemical, electric, material science).
•7+ years technical expertise in project management, systems or process engineering, or technical discipline engineering in a food manufacturing environment.
•Experience managing >$7 million annual capital programs.
•Strong track record of engineering aptitude, ability to apply engineering principles, and problem solving.
•Experience in providing a team with direction and vision with the ability to motivate performance, recognize strengths, and provide feedback and challenges to team members.
•Experience with mechanical and electrical blueprints, schematic development, PLC troubleshooting/programming, and an in-depth knowledge of process and control systems.
•5+ years project management experience including budget and team responsibilities.
