OVERVIEW:
The Center for Jewish History (NYC | cjh.org) is a cultural institution, independent research facility and destination for the exploration of Jewish history and heritage. It is home to five partner organizations: American Jewish Historical Society, American Sephardi Federation, Leo Baeck Institute, Yeshiva University Museum and YIVO Institute for Jewish Research.
The partners archival collections span more than 700 years of history and total over 500,000 volumes and 100 million documents (in 23 languages and 52 alphabet systems). The collections also include thousands of artworks, textiles, ritual objects, recordings, films and photographs.
At the Center, history is illuminated through scholarship and cultural programming, exhibitions and symposia, lectures and performances.
The Center seeks an Engineer who is responsible for planning, organizing, developing and directing the overall operation of the Physical Plant Services unit in accordance with policies and procedures, current federal, state and local standards, guidelines and regulations governing the CJH facility to assure that the facility is maintained in a safe and comfortable manner.
REPORTS TO:
Chief Engineer
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Maintain safe working conditions and practices in the unit.
Work with other building engineers to operate, repair, test and maintain the cooling tower, chillers, pumps, A/C units and reverse osmosis stations.
Monitor staff to ensure that they are following established safety and infection control policies and procedures including body mechanics, and ergonomics.
Maintain the interior and exterior of all buildings and grounds year round.
On a regular basis evaluate the performance, condition, and reliability of all plumbing, mechanical and electrical equipment.
Responsible for updating necessary logs on a daily basis.
Implement, evaluate, and maintain computerized Preventative Maintenance Program.
Conduct annual assessments of facilities to identify areas needing improvement and repairs.
Purchase equipment and supplies as necessary or as may be required.
Ensure safety and security of all visitors and staff. Maintain guard service/door locks and key control.
Attend continuing educational training for professional growth and knowledge of new industry policies and procures.
CERTIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Certified by the New York Fire Department in:
o Q-99: Refrigeration certificate
o G-35: Certificate to operate air compressor
o P-99: Certificate to operate low pressure boiler
1 to 3 years experience in related position.
SKILLS & ABILITIES
Ability to ensure that the Center is compliant with all OSHA, City, County, State and Federal standards as well as building codes and standards, such as mechanical and electrical;
Deep understanding of mechanical systems;
Experience with engineering and electrical systems (included HVAC management system and BMS);
Working knowledge of refrigeration cycle, electric control systems;
Ability to plan, organize and coordinate multiple projects and daily activities;
Strong verbal and written communication skills;
Ability to read blue prints, schematics, wiring diagrams and nameplates;
Proven problem-solving skills, and the ability to handle stressful situations in an efficient, calm manner;
This position requires on-call flexibility for off-hour and weekend emergencies.
